Gwent Green Grid

A green infrastructure partnership in South West Wales

Our aim is to develop a community-owned, carbon-negative energy solution that supports the local economy, local community woodland and local forestry industry.

What is Gwent Green Grid?

The partnership is led by Monmouthshire County Council, who’ll be working with Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport and Torfaen councils, alongside Natural Resources Wales, Forest Research and Severn Wye Energy Agency on delivering the project over the next three years.

The term ‘green infrastructure’ describes the network of natural and semi-natural features, green spaces, rivers and lakes that fill the region’s landscape and connect its villages, towns and cities. Green infrastructure provides areas for leisure and wildlife, contributes towards healthy lifestyles and is crucial to mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The members of the Gwent Green Grid partnership are working together to ensure a consistent approach to environmental management, health and wellbeing across the Gwent area. This work forms part of an approach to meet the challenge of managing the area’s natural resources for future generations.

The project will deliver a range of benefits for local communities, including access projects and tree planting. Improvements will also be made to a range of green spaces, including urban and country parks, cycleways, public rights of way and woodlands. The partnership will also encourage the protection and promotion of pollinators, continuing the successful work of the Linking our Landscape Network across Monmouthshire.

What Severn Wye do

In the first phase of the project, Severn Wye will be carrying out a detailed study of the area, mapping and analysing the existing green infrastructure, waste streams and land management needs. This study will identify opportunities for enriching the local environment by managing natural resources carefully and finding the best way to process green waste sustainably.
