Opportunity opens for community groups to apply for grants up to £20,000
Applications opened on 3 August for a new round of the Windfall scheme which offers grants for projects in Montgomeryshire. In this fifth round of funding, community groups in the Carno, Caersws, Trefeglwys, Dwyriw, Llanbrynmair and Llanerfyl community council areas only are invited to apply. For this round, Windfall expects to offer grants of up to £12,500, but might offer up to £20,000 if they receive an application (for more than £12,500) that is of exceptional quality.
Low carbon travel initiatives such as cycling, walking and sharing vehicles, and educational activities in pursuit of sustainable development may be funded, as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Beneficiaries in the past have included village halls and other community buildings, football clubs, energy cooperatives, training organisations and climate action groups. Successful applicants could receive a grant of up to 100% of the project value.
Windfall is the working name of the Mid Wales Community Energy Trust – a not-for-profit organisation that aims to link income from renewable energy with rural regeneration through sustainable energy projects.
Grant aid to community projects uses money provided voluntarily by developers of energy generation and other developments.
The current funding is being made available by Amegni Ltd, which owns the Carno Wind Farms.
For this autumn 2026 opportunity, Windfall is welcoming ‘revenue’ proposals as well as requests for capital grants. For example, education for sustainable development associated with work in school grounds (benefiting nature) is likely to be an eligible proposal.
Chair of Windfall, Andy Bull, said:
‘Windfall grants are making a tangible difference to local people, especially those around the Carno wind farm. We are keen to hear from smaller groups that might have thought this grant was not for them, and from those that operate at least partially in Welsh. We’re open to considering a wide range of proposals.’
Sustainability charity Severn Wye Energy Agency is managing tthe grant scheme to distribute funds to successful applicants.
Severn Wye’s director of energy services, Allison Cawley, said:
‘This round of funding will give further crucial support to sustainability projects. It’s always exciting to see what ideas come forward and to help local communities progress on their low-carbon journeys.’
