Will 2025 be your most energy efficient year yet?

A man starts to open a loft hatch

A New Year challenge

Here at Severn Wye we naturally spend a lot of time helping other people be more energy efficient. But it’s easy to take it for granted that we’re always thinking about our own home energy use too. So we challenged ourselves to make some energy efficiency resolutions for ourselves for the coming year.

Once we’d decided longer lie-ins at the weekend didn’t count, we made a range of commitments aimed at cutting our home energy use or generating renewable energy.

Small things can make a big difference

Our resolutions varied in scope, but that’s fine: the point is to make a start, however small, to save energy where you can.

Here’s a flavour of the steps some of us will be taking in 2025…we hope there’ll be a few ideas here that will inspire you too.

  • Target easy-to-fix draughts
  • Insulate my loft hatch
  • Fit trickle vents to fix high humidity
  • Replace direct electric heating with a heat pump
  • Squeeze a bit more solar PV onto my roof
  • Look into installing a battery to make the most of my solar
  • Get an electric throw for when I’m working at home
  • Apply for funding to get solar panels
  • Borrow a thermal camera to spot where I’m losing heat in my new build
  • Finally get to grips with my heating controls: set them for max comfort at the lowest temperature
  • Only have the heating on when there’s someone at home!
