Trustees wanted for new Powys charity

Applications are invited for volunteer trustees to grow well-known Llandrindod Wells community hub, the Hive.

The Hive, which is currently managed by charity Severn Wye, provides a space for important community services that have no other base in the town, including two community banking services. It also provides families with crucial items at no cost or for a nominal rental fee through a school uniform exchange, a baby bank of donated clothes and equipment, and a ‘library of things’.

Energy experts Severn Wye have run the Hive since its inception in 2021 as the ‘Llandrindod Wells Working Together’ project, originally funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. Three employees now work with local volunteers and diverse local partner organisations to help families who are finding it hard to make ends meet while juggling the demands of work and family life.

The recruitment represents an important new phase for the Hive, as Dave Gittins, Severn Wye’s Director for Wales, explains:

‘For the past four years Severn Wye has incubated the Hive from small beginnings to become a well-known and vital community resource. We’ve been delighted to see the benefits it brings to hundreds of local families every month, and in that time we have also learned the need for this kind of support extends much wider than the town itself. With Lottery funding drawing to a close, and our strategy to focus on energy-based projects, we are supporting the Hive to become independent of Severn Wye.

The Hive is more than ready to grow and will be able to access new and more diverse funding sources that are not available to a large organisation like Severn Wye. Trustees of a new, independent charity would have the freedom to expand the project in ways that will offer people across Powys the best access to support services. This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious set of trustees to take the reins and lead the Hive into a new phase.’

The trustees and chair will work closely with PAVO – Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations – to set up the new charity so the Hive can continue operating when The National Lottery Community Fund contribution ends on 30 September 2025.

Additional funding has been secured which will enable current services to operate through to February 2026.
