Trust funds available to relieve energy debt

An older man wrapped in warm layers looks at a fuel bill, perhaps in fuel poverty or unaffordable bills.

If you’re facing unaffordable energy debt, one of the ways we can help is to guide you through an application to an energy supplier trust fund.

These funds are designed to help people clear household energy debt and regain control of their finances.

With you all the way

Each trust fund has strict eligibility criteria and applications can be quite complex – but you don’t have to go it alone.

Our community-based energy advisers can help you gather the paperwork and evidence you need and support you throughout the application process.

What to expect

As with most grant applications you will need to provide evidence of your financial circumstances. Trust funds also require you to show that you have sought debt advice, typically through a charity recognised for this purpose such as the National Debt Line or Step Change – all of which we can help you with.

Before you receive a grant, you might need to demonstrate that you can cover your ongoing average monthly energy use for around three months and/or agree to an affordable payment plan to cover your ongoing energy use, to make sure you don’t fall into debt again.

We can tell you if a trust fund application is right for you and guide you through each stage.
