Our Llangollen – Our Future

Llangollen residents are beginning an exciting journey to tackle the energy issues that are important to them, as part of Energised Communities, a five-year programme funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Working together to energise Llangollen

Llangollen is a town with a rich history – rich in landscapes, culture, architecture, heritage and people.

‘Our Llangollen – Our Future’ is an opportunity for local residents, community groups, businesses and others to have their voice heard, captured and acted upon.

We are delivering Energised Communities, a five-year programme funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, in ten rural locations across Wales and England. The programme is looking at the issues, challenges and opportunities for rural communities, with Llangollen one of the ten communities chosen to take part. This is an opportunity for local people to shape the future of the town and surrounding areas.

The key themes of the Energised Communities programme are energy, sustainability and climate.

The project has sub-themes including:

  • Community-owned energy
  • Food & growing
  • Community transport
  • Land & nature
  • Active travel
  • Community buildings

While Llangollen is a great place to live with it also has some challenges. Like many towns, Llangollen faces issues with housing, employment, potential over tourism, transport and connectivity, access to services, public health, fuel and food poverty, and homelessness.

An initial consultation event with Llangollen residents was held in September – stands and speakers are listed below and watch this space for updates.

What matters to you

The first public consultation event, held in Llangollen in late September 2025, provided valuable insight into local issues, challenges and concerns, as well as existing initiatives and future aspirations relating to energy, sustainability and climate action.
The event highlighted a strong level of awareness and engagement within the community, alongside a clear appetite for practical, locally driven solutions.
Key topics raised included:

  • the high cost of energy
  • improving the energy efficiency of homes and community buildings
  • opportunities for new community renewable energy schemes
  • challenges around public transport and active travel
  • community food growing and reducing food waste
  • reuse, repair, sharing and recycling initiatives.
