Not always so easy to read the meter

In common with many people we meet, this lady was worried about her energy bills – not because she knew they were high, but because she just didn’t know if they were correct as she didn’t know how to take a meter reading. She thought she must surely be in debt and turned to us for help. We were able to offer her a home visit, during which our community-based energy adviser explained how the meter worked and helped her to confidently take a reading.

After checking the client’s energy bills our adviser called the energy supplier and discovered that he situation was more complicated because, despite a smart meter being installed, only the electric meter was submitting readings – the gas smart meter had not been properly commissioned. Once the supplier received a correct, up-to-date meter reading, it turned out this lady was in fact in credit and she was able to lower her direct debit by £73 a month.

A huge relief for this lady who, thanks to a quick home visit, is now confident submitting her own meter readings, understands her energy bills, and is paying less every month.
